Learning at Emerald Secondary College
Our motto is ‘Access to Excellence’, and we strive for excellence in every aspect of our learning and teaching program. We expect every child to reach their personal best in and out of the classroom. At Emerald we provide a learning program to engage, enrich and prepare students for their future. Students study a combination of core and elective subjects which become increasingly personalised as students move through the school, and we pride ourselves on providing a pathway for every student.
Year 10 Learning Program
Students in Year 10 undertake a VCE, VCAL or SEAL Pathway.
Students in the VCE Pathway study Maths and English classes at a Foundation, General or Enrichment level. Students then choose from a variety of Science, Health PE, Humanities, Arts and Technology electives to personalise their course. Students are also permitted to accelerate a VCE study*, continue with Japanese and with their Advance course.
In the VCAL Pathway students will achieve a Foundation VCAL Certificate, and experience a VCAL course. At the end of the year students can continue with a VCAL course, or move into a VCE course. For more information about VCAL and VET see the College website.
Students in the VCAL Pathway study Maths and English classes at a Foundation, General or Enriched level. Students also study the VCAL units of Work Related Skills and Personal Development Skills, an on-site VET subject and a choice of electives from the Science, Health PE, Humanities, Arts and Technology areas. Students may also wish to study a VET subject offsite. Entry into the VCAL Pathway is selective, and students must apply through an interview process as part of the Course Counselling process.
Students in the SEAL Program have a variety of pathway options available, which include a combination of accelerated subjects and elective subjects. More detailed information about our SEAL Program is located on the College website.
Students are permitted to accelerate subjects when they have demonstrated performance above the expected level. Students must also demonstrate an English standard at the expected level. Students wishing to accelerate a VCE subject must apply through the Senior School office as part of the Course Counselling process.
Year 11 & 12 - VCE & VCAL
Students at Emerald can study either VCE or VCAL in their final years. Students who have accelerated VCE subjects also have the opportunity to study University subjects during their final year. For more information about both of these programs, see the College website, and download the Senior School Handbook.
