Connect Program

At Emerald Secondary College we focus on developing all aspects of academic, social and emotional development and wellbeing in our students.

Through the Year 9 Connect program our vision is to encourage and assist all Year 9 students in developing the skills to become independent, resilient and responsible global citizens. The Connect program also allows students to connect with and contextualise their place in our society whilst being encouraged to become fair, informed, reflective and responsible decision makers.

The Connect program covers areas and topics that are not considered part of a conventional curriculum and ensures that students are well equipped with the life skills when they enter the real world.

Each term has an allocated theme: Personal, Future Careers, Health and Community, which are linked together to coherently to achieve the program goals. Each of the four terms highlights a different focus to prepare our Year 9 students to transition from adolescence to well informed young adulthood. The Connect program runs in a four period block once a week.

Complementary value of the Connect program

This program facilitates opportunities that lead to growth in student independence that can be helpful in achieving improved results in higher studies including VCE and VCAL .

We are able to address additional areas of student interest as it is a vast program and that allows us to cover areas which cannot be covered by a conventional curriculum.

The curriculum is planned to equip students with skills and knowledge that will assist them in other subjects, such as research skills through an inquiry project.

An important aspect of this program is that student’s Home group Teacher delivers the program. This continues to build positive relationships and connections with teachers and peers.
