Outdoor Education Program
For more than 30 years, Emerald Secondary College has proudly offered a continuous Outdoor Education program, providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build confidence and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Students can choose Outdoor Education as a Middle Years elective (Years 9 and 10), with pathways continuing into VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies in Years 11 and 12.
Outdoor & Environmental Studies encourages students to engage safely and sustainably with outdoor environments through hands-on, experiential learning. Students develop an understanding of the importance of healthy natural environments and cultural heritage, while exploring the impacts of human activity at local and global levels. The subject also examines sustainability, environmental management and the relationships and tensions between different users of outdoor spaces.
The school has made the most of a variety of practical outdoor experiences, including camping, bushwalking, canoeing, caving, rafting, surfing, cross-country skiing, snow camping, climbing and abseiling. Through these activities, students develop teamwork, leadership, resilience and a strong connection to the natural world.
