Peer Support Program
Peer Support aims to develop:
- a sense of belonging and equality;
- acceptance of new situations; and
- organizational and leadership skills.
Trained year 10 students work with a small group of year 7’s, for one period a week (on a rotational basis, ie: not missing the same class each week) during term 1.
The content of the sessions is organized for the leaders, using guidelines develop by the Peer Support Foundation, and covers areas such as self-esteem, communication and bullying/harassment. A balance of constructive discussion topics and social interaction is the basis for each session. The student leaders are in charge of their group, however close supervision is provided by teachers who have undertaken Peer Support training.
This year, we hope to extend this leadership opportunity to include mentoring training and further opportunities throughout the year. This will not encroach upon class time however. On completing the program, the students receive a certificate to acknowledge their contribution to the College’s leadership structure, which is an excellent addition to their personal resumes.
Permission for participation in the Peer Support Program.
